Ellensburg residents are set to benefit from updated regulations regarding Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) following a recent government meeting focused on housing development. The meeting highlighted the importance of understanding the distinctions between urban and rural areas in Kittitas County, particularly for those looking to build ADUs.
A planner from Firdapse County explained that in urban growth areas, such as Ellensburg, residents can construct up to two ADUs on their property, provided they meet specific dimensional and intensity standards. The city of Ellensburg has an interlocal agreement that allows it to set these standards, ensuring consistency in development regulations.
For those outside the urban growth area, only one ADU is permitted per lot, again subject to certain setbacks and height restrictions. The planner emphasized the importance of consulting with local authorities, such as Kittitas County Public Health and Public Works, to ensure compliance with regulations, especially concerning septic systems and water distribution.
The county is currently in the process of updating its regulations in line with new state legislation, which is expected to be adopted by October. These changes aim to streamline the permitting process and provide clearer guidelines for potential ADU developers.
Residents interested in building an ADU are encouraged to reach out to local planners for guidance on the upcoming changes and to navigate the permitting process effectively. This initiative reflects the city's commitment to enhancing housing options and accommodating growth within the community.
