Cincinnati's Healthy Neighborhoods Committee is taking bold steps to support local businesses in Avondale, with a proposed $250,000 reallocation aimed at revitalizing the area. During the August 5 meeting, a motion was introduced to redirect funds from an old capital account to the Grow Avondale Business Initiative, a collaborative effort involving the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the Urban League, and the Avondale Development Corporation.
Council members discussed the pressing challenges faced by businesses in the Avondale Town Center, emphasizing the need for both survival and growth. Following consultations with local business owners, three key funding areas were identified: support for existing businesses to expand, technical assistance, and resources for new businesses looking to establish themselves in the town center.
The initiative will provide grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, alongside a pitch contest for prospective businesses. LISC will oversee the fund's administration, ensuring that the financial support reaches those who need it most. Additionally, private financial institutions have expressed interest in contributing to the fund, highlighting a community-wide commitment to fostering economic success.
Council member Albee expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, seeking clarity on the distribution mechanism of the funds. The committee confirmed that LISC and the Urban League would manage the fund, ensuring a streamlined process for supporting local enterprises.
This initiative marks a significant investment in Avondale's economic future, aiming to create a thriving business environment that benefits the entire community. As discussions continue, the committee anticipates further collaboration with local stakeholders to maximize the impact of this funding.
