The Burnsville City Council took a significant step in addressing the opioid crisis during its regular meeting on August 19, 2025, by proclaiming August 24-30 as Overdose and Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week. This proclamation highlights the urgent need for community awareness and action against the devastating impact of fentanyl-related overdoses, which have claimed the lives of over 32 residents in Dakota County last year alone.
Mayor Alysm Coutts emphasized the importance of education, harm reduction, and accessible treatment in combating the opioid epidemic. "The people affected by overdose are our sons and daughters, our mothers and fathers, our brothers and sisters, and they deserve our love, compassion, and support," she stated, underscoring the personal toll of this crisis on families and the community.
The council's decision to recognize this week aims to encourage residents to engage in prevention efforts and support those affected by addiction. The proclamation was presented to JJ Johnson from Dakota County Opioid Prevention Coordination, marking a collaborative effort to raise awareness and promote resources for those struggling with substance use.
In addition to the proclamation, the council discussed upcoming meetings, including regular sessions scheduled for September 2 and September 16, and a budget work session on September 9. These meetings will continue to address important community issues, including the ongoing fight against the opioid epidemic.
