In a recent Honolulu City Council meeting, a significant resolution was passed to honor a beloved community figure by renaming the Pearl City District Park pool to the Ken Suenaga Pearl City District Park pool. This decision, which garnered unanimous support from council members, reflects the deep appreciation for Suenaga's extensive contributions to the Pearl City community and beyond.
Councilmember Okimoto took the floor to pay tribute to Suenaga, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Born in Honolulu in 1931, Suenaga has dedicated 59 years to serving the Pearl City community, notably as a coach and mentor. His journey began in 1967 with the Palama Swim Club, where he inspired countless young swimmers. In 1972, he founded the Pearl City High School swim team, leading it to numerous championships and nurturing talents, including the late U.S. Representative Mark Takai.
Okimoto emphasized Suenaga's legacy of mentorship and advocacy, highlighting his service as a combat medic during the Korean War and his commitment to providing recreational opportunities for youth. The renaming of the pool serves as a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to fostering healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
The council also addressed other matters, including the acceptance of a generous donation for a traditional bench and plaque at Makapu'u Beach Park, valued at over $2,500. This gesture, made by the Tarleski family, further illustrates the spirit of community support that permeates the council's initiatives.
As the meeting concluded, the council's unanimous approval of the resolution to rename the pool stands as a testament to the enduring impact of individuals like Ken Suenaga, whose legacy will now be forever etched in the heart of Pearl City.
