DeKalb City officials have taken significant steps towards advancing a new industrial project that promises to enhance local workforce development and environmental sustainability. During the Planning and Zoning meeting on September 2, 2025, the city discussed a proposal to annex and rezone approximately 30 acres of land on the west side of Peace Road for a planned development industrial district, which aligns with the city’s comprehensive plan.

A key highlight of the project is its commitment to workforce development through a four-year free electrician apprenticeship program. This initiative aims to provide local residents with the opportunity to gain valuable skills and secure long-term employment, particularly in connection with the two proposed data center buildings and a solar field. The program is designed to be accessible, requiring no prior qualifications, making it an inclusive opportunity for community members.

The project also includes a comprehensive decommissioning plan to ensure proper site restoration at the end of its operational life. This plan will incorporate a financial assurance mechanism, such as a letter of credit or surety bond, to guarantee that funds are available for full removal and restoration of the site.

Residents from the nearby Summit Enclave development raised concerns during the meeting regarding potential noise levels and the cooling systems of the data centers. In response, city officials assured that the project meets all necessary zoning requirements, including setbacks from residential areas and additional landscaping for visual screening along Peace Road.

The proposed solar arrays, which will stand at a height of 8.5 feet, are designed to be unobtrusive, with a significant existing tree line preserved to mitigate visual impact. The project is expected to enhance local infrastructure, including water and sanitary services, while also contributing to the city’s renewable energy goals.

As the city moves forward with this proposal, the focus remains on balancing industrial growth with community needs and environmental stewardship. The next steps will involve finalizing the decommissioning plan and addressing any remaining concerns from residents before construction can commence.
