In a recent St. Charles County Board of Zoning Adjustment meeting, a proposal to enhance a local nonprofit school’s athletic facilities was discussed, highlighting the community's growing need for accessible recreational spaces. The request, presented by Sean Nelson on behalf of his parents, seeks two variances for the school’s newly established turf soccer field located on a five-acre property.

The first variance aims to exceed the county's lighting regulation, allowing for illumination levels greater than 0.5 foot candles at the property line. The second variance requests permission to install light poles taller than the current 20-foot limit. These changes are intended to ensure that the field can be used effectively during the shorter daylight hours of fall and spring, particularly for the school’s 23 students, who range from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Nelson emphasized that the field is designed for the school’s athletic programs, which currently do not include organized teams or tournaments. Instead, the facility will serve as a training ground for students and their friends, fostering a community-oriented environment. The school, which opened last year, has a capacity of 50 students and aims to provide a safe and well-lit space for physical activity.
