Trustee Gutierrez raised critical concerns about increasing immigration enforcement during the Hanover Park Village Board meeting on September 4, 2025. Highlighting recent sightings of immigration officials at local gas stations, Gutierrez emphasized the fear this instills in the community and reaffirmed the village's commitment to the Trust Act, which protects the rights of immigrants.
Gutierrez encouraged residents to utilize resources available on the village's YouTube page, including a comprehensive video detailing their rights under the Trust Act. "Anyone, regardless of who they are, have a right to call 911, and our police will be there to serve," he stated, reinforcing the message of safety and support for all community members.
In addition to addressing immigration issues, Gutierrez expressed gratitude to those who have rallied around the immigrant community and acknowledged the efforts of the Historic Committee for their work in preserving local history. He also pointed out the need for better preservation of historical artifacts, noting that some are currently stored in unsuitable conditions.
Trustee Porter briefly interjected to remind attendees that Mexican Independence Day celebrations begin on September 15, further highlighting the cultural diversity within Hanover Park. The meeting underscored the village's ongoing commitment to inclusivity and the importance of community support during challenging times.
