Elko County has officially declared September 2025 as Suicide Prevention Month, following a proclamation approved during the Board of Commissioners meeting on September 4. This initiative aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention, treatment, and recovery, encouraging community members to recognize the signs of distress and reach out for help.
Commissioner Domo read the proclamation, which emphasizes the importance of community involvement in suicide prevention efforts. The 2025 theme, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," invites Nevadans to support one another with messages of hope and healing. The proclamation also highlights the ongoing work of the 0 Suicides Elko County program, which focuses on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues and promoting life-saving resources.
Lynette Vega, president and founder of 0 Suicides Elko County, expressed gratitude for the proclamation, noting its role in uniting the community around suicide awareness. She announced upcoming events, including a walk on September 13 and free training sessions on how to engage with individuals at risk of suicide. These initiatives aim to foster a supportive environment and equip residents with the skills needed to address this critical issue.
The proclamation aligns with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, a global observance supported by the World Health Organization. The county encourages all residents to participate in activities throughout the month, reinforcing the message that suicide prevention is a collective responsibility.
