A groundbreaking $2.3 billion infrastructure project is set to transform the I-10 corridor between Westlake and Lake Charles, Louisiana, with construction expected to begin in early 2026. The ambitious plan aims to replace the aging bridge built in 1952, which currently handles over 90,000 vehicles daily, nearly double its original capacity.
The new corridor will feature six travel lanes and two auxiliary lanes, significantly improving traffic flow and safety. Notably, the design includes an elevated overpass at Sampson Street, eliminating delays caused by train crossings. Enhanced lighting will mimic the current bridge's arch, adding a modern aesthetic to the structure.
During a recent Calcasieu Parish Police Jury meeting, officials outlined the project's timeline, indicating that traffic will shift to the new alignment by February 2030, with tolling commencing in August 2031. This transition period will allow drivers to use the new corridor toll-free for over a year.
Utility relocations and right-of-way acquisitions are already underway, with early construction activities beginning this month. The project will be executed in four segments simultaneously, ensuring that I-10 remains open throughout the construction phase.
Concerns were raised about recent traffic disruptions caused by simultaneous bridge repairs on I-10 and I-210, which led to significant delays for emergency services. DOTD officials acknowledged the challenges and emphasized their commitment to minimizing future disruptions.
As the project progresses, local businesses, particularly those near the construction sites, are expected to face challenges. However, officials assured that access to these businesses will be maintained throughout the construction period.
For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to visit the project website, where they can find videos, newsletters, and contact information for inquiries. The project promises to enhance transportation in Southwest Louisiana while addressing current infrastructure needs.
