The Ventura County Air Pollution Control Board is ramping up its outreach efforts to combat air pollution, with a focus on community engagement and education. During the meeting on September 9, 2025, officials announced the launch of tier 1 outreach activities, backed by a budget of $10,000 over the next year. These initiatives will include staff training, distribution of educational materials at community events, and a robust social media campaign.
Public Information Officer Karen Grennan detailed the outreach strategy, highlighting participation in local events such as the upcoming Banana Festival at the Port of Hueneme on September 27. Last year’s festival proved successful, with over 600 contacts made, primarily from residents in Oxnard and Port Hueneme. Grennan emphasized the importance of targeting low-income communities, using an EPA screening map to identify areas most in need of assistance.
In addition to event participation, the outreach will also involve distributing flyers in local churches and other community hubs. The board is particularly focused on ensuring that underserved areas, including parts of the Santa Clara River Valley, receive adequate information and resources.
A notable project in the pipeline is the installation of electric vehicle charging stations in Santa Paula, addressing a critical need for infrastructure in the area. The board is currently in discussions with the city to secure funding for this initiative.
As the Air Pollution Control Board moves forward with these plans, the emphasis remains on fostering community connections and enhancing public awareness about air quality issues. The anticipated outcomes include increased community engagement and improved access to resources for residents in affected areas.
