The City of Washington is gearing up for its annual observance of the National Day of Prayer on May 1, 2025, as Mayor James D. Hagedorn officially proclaimed the day during the recent council meeting. This year’s theme, “Pour Out God of Hope and Be Filled,” is inspired by Romans 15:13, emphasizing the importance of prayer in fostering hope and unity within the community.
The proclamation highlighted the historical significance of prayer in American society, tracing its roots back to the Continental Congress in 1774. Mayor Hagedorn noted that the National Day of Prayer, established by Congress in 1952 and reaffirmed in 1988, serves as a vital reminder for citizens to seek guidance and wisdom through prayer.
The upcoming event is expected to draw significant participation, with last year witnessing around 50,000 gatherings nationwide. Local festivities will take place at the VFW on Jefferson Street at noon, featuring a diverse lineup of prayers from community leaders, including school board president Kelly Brinkman and Chamber of Commerce representative Jennifer Giesecki. The service aims to encompass various societal aspects, with prayers dedicated to education, families, businesses, and law enforcement.
Mayor Hagedorn encouraged all residents to join in this powerful, non-denominational service, reinforcing the message that collective prayer can bring joy, peace, and hope to the community. As the city prepares for this meaningful observance, the call for unity and reflection resonates strongly among its citizens.
