Edmond Public Schools (EPS) is moving forward with plans for the new Edmond Transition Academy, designed to enhance educational opportunities for students with special needs. During the recent board meeting on September 9, 2025, officials presented the building's design, emphasizing its focus on inclusion and functionality.

The new facility, located adjacent to the existing Scissor Tail building, will feature an 8,000 square foot layout that includes classrooms, a kitchen area for practical learning, and spaces for recreational activities. The design aims to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding environment, using similar materials to those found in the Scissor Tail building. The addition of a basketball court and ample outdoor play areas is also planned, ensuring that students have access to both educational and recreational resources.

Board members expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to provide a more organized and functional space compared to the current Star Academy, which has been described as makeshift. The Transition Academy is expected to offer a wider range of services and learning opportunities, including job skills training, which will better prepare students for their futures.

In addition to the Transition Academy, the board discussed plans for an expansion at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) at Sunset. This project will involve adding approximately 2,400 square feet to the existing facility, which will include a conference room and a flexible classroom space. The expansion aims to address the needs of young learners while ensuring that outdoor play areas remain safe and accessible.

Concerns about flooding in the area were raised, but officials reassured the board that previous improvements have effectively mitigated those issues. The board unanimously approved both projects, allowing the district to move forward with the bidding process.
