Avondale's City Council received an in-depth presentation on the city's speed safety camera program during their recent meeting, highlighting its implementation and effectiveness in enhancing roadway safety. Chief Bates introduced the session, which featured insights from Lieutenant Justin Iowen of the Avondale Police Department and Judge Jennings from the Avondale City Courts.

The speed safety camera program, approved by the city council in May 2022, aims to reduce speeding and improve safety on Avondale's roads. The program, which began in May 2024, is contracted with Vero Mobility for five years and utilizes two movable camera units to address various traffic needs throughout the city.

Lieutenant Iowen explained that citations are issued for speeds exceeding 10 miles per hour over the limit, with the city exceeding state requirements by installing four warning signs instead of the mandated two. The program also includes social media outreach to inform residents about camera locations, ensuring transparency and awareness rather than creating a perception of a speed trap.

The selection of camera locations is based on historical accident data, community concerns, and assessments by Vero Mobility to ensure optimal placement without obstructions. The effectiveness of the program is evaluated through pre- and post-deployment accident data and speed assessments using covert speed monitoring devices.

Initial data from the program shows promising results. For instance, on Dysart Road, the average speed of vehicles decreased from 59 miles per hour to 56 miles per hour after the camera's deployment, with the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit halving. Accident data also indicated a reduction in incidents during the camera's active period.

The presentation concluded with a summary of violation events, revealing over 45,000 captures, with approximately 12,000 citations issued. The council was encouraged to provide feedback and ask questions, emphasizing the program's commitment to community safety and engagement.

As Avondale continues to refine its speed safety camera program, the city aims to foster safer driving habits and reduce traffic-related incidents, demonstrating a proactive approach to public safety on its roads.
