Avondale City Council is poised to enhance road safety after discussing the SS4A (Safe Routes, Safe Streets for All) grant during their recent meeting. This grant aims to develop a comprehensive safety action plan and demonstration projects, ultimately paving the way for future funding opportunities to improve traffic and transportation systems in the community.
The city has seen concerning statistics from 2017 to 2021, with 8,773 reported crashes, including 35 fatalities—11 of which involved pedestrians or cyclists. The data indicates that Avondale has a higher crash density compared to neighboring cities like Tolleson and Goodyear, highlighting the urgent need for targeted safety measures. The annual fatality rate stands at approximately 7.84 per 100,000 residents, underscoring the critical nature of the proposed safety initiatives.
The SS4A grant will enable Avondale to create a tailored action plan that identifies high-risk areas for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. This plan will involve engaging residents and stakeholders to collaboratively shape a safer transportation future.
In 2023, the city applied for the grant and was awarded funding, with the council recently approving resolution 10 80 four-eight 24. Following a change in the grant agreement by the Federal Highway Administration, the council is now considering a new form for approval. If granted, the city will hire a consultant to develop the action plan and initiate a minor demonstration project, which will include public outreach and data analysis.
This proactive approach not only aims to improve immediate safety but also positions Avondale to qualify for additional SS4A implementation grants in the future, reinforcing the city’s commitment to enhancing transportation safety for all its residents.
