The SoWashCo Schools Board held a workshop on September 4, 2025, focusing on significant updates regarding the construction and expansion of local elementary schools, particularly Grey Cloud, Bailey, and Pine Hill. The meeting introduced Jennifer Schwartz as the new principal of Grey Cloud Elementary, emphasizing the leadership changes as schools welcome students back for the new academic year.

A key topic of discussion was the ongoing construction projects aimed at addressing capacity concerns at these schools. Following the passage of a bond in November 2023, the district has made substantial progress, launching seven out of a total of 15 planned projects. The construction at secondary schools has already begun, and the focus is now shifting to the elementary schools, with work at Pine Hill already underway since January.

Mark DuBois, representing Coma Architects, provided insights into the design process for Grey Cloud and Bailey Elementary Schools. The design phase commenced in March, with plans to complete it and put the projects out to bid by the end of the year. Construction is slated to begin next summer. The expansion at Grey Cloud aims to accommodate 835 students, including pre-kindergarten, and will include a storm shelter as part of the new design.

The renovations will also update existing classroom pods to align with modern educational configurations, enhancing both internal and external spaces to blend with the current architecture. The leadership team overseeing these projects includes architects, school principals, and district officials, ensuring a collaborative approach to the design and construction phases.

As the district moves forward with these expansions, the community can expect improved facilities that will better serve the educational needs of students and families in the SoWashCo area. The board plans to continue updating the public on the progress of these essential projects, reinforcing their commitment to enhancing local education infrastructure.
