The City of Santa Clara is seeking nearly $97 million in funding for a series of critical infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing community safety, accessibility, and recreational facilities. During the recent Bond Compliance Oversight Committee meeting, city officials outlined a comprehensive plan that addresses various needs across the city, from road repairs to public safety enhancements.
One of the most significant proposals is a $16 million street resurfacing and rehabilitation project. This initiative aims to improve arterial and collector streets based on assessments from the city's pavement management system. The project will include surface seals, resurfacing, and reconstruction to ensure safer and more reliable roadways for residents.
In addition to road improvements, the city is prioritizing accessibility with a $5 million investment in American Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements. This funding will focus on upgrading curb ramps, sidewalks, and traffic signal push buttons, making it easier for individuals with disabilities to navigate public spaces.
The plan also includes $2.5 million for the rehabilitation of the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail, which will enhance the trail's surface and overall condition, promoting outdoor activities for the community. Furthermore, $300,000 is earmarked for new bicycle wayfinding signage, supporting the city's commitment to promoting cycling as a sustainable transportation option.
Public safety is another key focus, with $12 million proposed for fire station upgrades and replacements. This includes $4 million for the replacement of Fire Station 5 and similar funding for Fire Station 7, along with security upgrades at multiple fire stations to protect personnel and equipment.
The police department is also set to benefit from a proposed $805,000 for various facility improvements, including a feasibility study for a new real-time intelligence center and enhancements to the police training facility.
The city is not neglecting recreational facilities, with a total of $38.4 million requested for parks, libraries, and aquatics facilities. This includes significant renovations to playgrounds at Warburton and Henry Schmidt Parks, as well as upgrades to the Central Park Library's restrooms and lighting systems.
Stormwater management is addressed with a $16.5 million investment aimed at improving the storm drain system and implementing green infrastructure to manage runoff effectively. This includes projects to eliminate flooding risks and comply with state mandates for stormwater treatment.
Lastly, the city is requesting $1.15 million for improvements to the Triton Museum, focusing on essential roof repairs.
As the city moves forward with these proposals, officials emphasize the importance of these projects in enhancing the quality of life for Santa Clara residents. The funding request will be reviewed in the coming months, with the potential for significant improvements to the community's infrastructure and public services.
