The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners has taken a significant step towards enhancing fire protection services by proposing the creation of the Forsyth County Fire Commission. This initiative, discussed during the recent briefing on September 5, 2025, aims to establish a dedicated advisory board that will work continuously to improve the county's fire system.
Deputy County Manager Kyle Haney presented the resolution, highlighting that the commission will consist of 11 members, including a county commissioner, representatives from the Forsyth County Fire Association, and six citizens who are not affiliated with any fire department. This diverse composition is designed to ensure that the commission reflects the community's needs while providing expert insights into fire service operations.
The primary role of the Fire Commission will be to review and make recommendations on various aspects of fire protection, including capital budget requests and operational guidelines. The commission will also analyze reports from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) and other consultants to identify areas for improvement. Ultimately, any changes proposed by the commission will require approval from the Board of Commissioners, ensuring that community interests remain at the forefront of decision-making.
Commissioners expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing the importance of having a structured approach to fire service management. The establishment of this commission is expected to foster collaboration among fire departments and enhance the overall effectiveness of fire response across Forsyth County.
In addition to the fire commission discussion, the board also addressed the appointment of library director Yolanda Bolden to the Collidean board of directors, which will be voted on in an upcoming meeting.
As Forsyth County moves forward with these initiatives, residents can anticipate improved fire protection services and a more coordinated approach to emergency response, reflecting the community's commitment to safety and preparedness.
