Hunger Action Month was officially proclaimed by the Fort Pierce City Commission during their regular meeting on September 8, 2025, with a heartfelt address from Irela Guevara of the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Guevara expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the organization's commitment to combating food insecurity across Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee Counties.
Throughout September, the Treasure Coast Food Bank will join Feeding America in raising awareness about hunger, encouraging community involvement through events like the fifth annual Outrun Hunger 5K on September 20 and a "Go Orange" campaign on September 9, symbolizing hope and determination in the fight against hunger.
In addition to the hunger initiative, the meeting included a strategic plan update, focusing on various community development projects. City Manager Chess outlined progress on multiple initiatives, including the completion of mural projects in the Peacock Arts District and downtown, as well as updates on the Marina Park Conceptual Plan and Festival Street design.
The commission also discussed the upcoming budget adoption, which is expected to align with the strategic plan updates moving forward. The meeting underscored the city's ongoing commitment to enhancing community resilience and beautification efforts, while also addressing pressing social issues like food insecurity.
As the month unfolds, the Treasure Coast Food Bank's efforts will be pivotal in mobilizing community support, reinforcing the message that collective action can make a significant impact in the fight against hunger.
