The Ridgecrest City Council took a significant step towards modernizing its landscaping regulations during the meeting on September 3, 2025, with the second reading and adoption of a new commercial landscape ordinance. This ordinance aims to update the existing municipal code to reflect contemporary standards for commercial landscape maintenance.
The ordinance introduces clear design standards and maintenance requirements for commercial landscaped areas, which have not been updated in decades. Currently, businesses are required to maintain their landscapes according to the standards set when their site plans were approved, which could date back as far as 30 years. The new regulations will promote water-efficient landscaping and provide updated guidelines for trees, shrubs, and ground cover.
Additionally, the ordinance includes provisions for hardscape materials, allowing for a broader range of landscaping options, such as decomposed granite. It also recognizes that there may be practical exceptions to the rules, ensuring flexibility for existing landscapes.
Rebecca McCourt from the Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce expressed appreciation for the council's efforts in modernizing these standards, highlighting the importance of adapting to current environmental needs.
The adoption of this ordinance marks a proactive move by the Ridgecrest City Council to enhance the aesthetic and ecological quality of commercial areas, setting the stage for more sustainable landscaping practices in the community.
