Washtenaw County Materials Management Plans to Reduce Food Waste and Increase Recycling

Washtenaw County is taking significant steps towards improving its waste management practices, as highlighted in the recent Board of Commissioners meeting on September 3, 2025. A key focus of the discussion was the ongoing efforts of the Materials Management Planning Committee, which is developing a comprehensive plan aimed at reducing landfill reliance and increasing recycling rates.

During the meeting, it was revealed that a staggering 90% of materials sent to landfills are recyclable, with food waste alone accounting for 20% of landfill volume. This data underscores the urgent need for effective waste diversion strategies. The committee's proposed plan, expected to be presented in about a year, aims to tackle these issues head-on by promoting organic waste management and enhancing recycling education.

The committee outlined four primary goals: reducing landfill dependency, increasing the diversion of recyclable materials, improving the quality and quantity of recovered materials, and providing accessible information to the community. These initiatives are designed to foster a culture of sustainability and responsible waste management among residents.

In addition to the committee's efforts, the meeting also introduced a new opportunity for residents to become certified master composters through a six-week workshop offered by Project GROW in partnership with Washtenaw County. This program, running from September 16 to October 21, aims to equip participants with the skills needed to effectively compost organic waste, further supporting the county's sustainability goals.

The county has committed to funding these initiatives beyond the grant period, ensuring continued support for waste management improvements through at least September 2026. As Washtenaw County moves forward with these plans, residents can look forward to a more sustainable future with enhanced waste management practices that benefit the entire community.
