Historic Preservation Commission Approves Landmark Designation for Mint Mall and Hall

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission is taking significant steps to preserve the cultural heritage of the Filipino community by considering the landmark designation of the Mint Mall and Hall. This site, located within the Soma Filipinos Cultural Heritage District, is recognized not only for its historical significance but also for its ongoing role as a hub for Filipino residents and small businesses.

During a recent meeting, community leaders and advocates expressed their strong support for the landmarking of the Mint Mall and Hall. The proposal is part of the Soma Filipinas Cultural History, Housing, and Economics Sustainability Strategies Report, known as the CHESS Report, which was adopted unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2022. This report outlines 22 strategies aimed at preserving the cultural identity and economic sustainability of the district, with landmarking identified as a key strategy.

Angelica Cabande, director of Samken and vice chair of the Filipino American National Historic Society, highlighted the Mint Mall's historical roots, recalling the struggles of local businesses against eviction during the tech boom in the early 2000s. The Mint Mall has since become a symbol of resilience for the Filipino community, serving as a gathering place for cultural events and a support network for immigrants.

Raquel Redondias, director of Soma Pilipinas, emphasized the importance of preserving such cultural assets, noting that the Mint Mall has been a vital part of the community's identity and history. She shared her personal connection to the site, recalling its vibrant cultural scene and the efforts made to protect it from displacement.

The commission's consideration of the landmark designation is seen as a crucial step in recognizing and preserving the historical and cultural significance of the Mint Mall and Hall. Community members are hopeful that this action will not only honor their past but also ensure the continued presence of Filipino culture in San Francisco's evolving landscape. The decision will contribute to broader efforts to maintain the cultural fabric of the city and support the needs of its diverse communities.
