Mitchell County officials are making significant strides in the ongoing reconstruction of the Blue Ridge Parkway, with the completion of Phase 1 and the mobilization of contractors for Phase 2. During a recent meeting, it was announced that Phase 2, which spans 18 miles, is projected for completion by fall 2026. Meanwhile, Phase 3, covering the final 24 miles from Route 80 to Mount Mitchell, is currently in the design phase, with plans to expedite its progress.

The reconstruction efforts are crucial following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene, which resulted in numerous landslides along the parkway. Officials emphasized that while funding is available, the complexity of the work requires specialized contractors, which has slowed the pace of progress. The techniques being employed are straightforward, involving reinforced slopes and grading work, but the sheer volume of slides presents a significant challenge.

In addition to road repairs, six out of eight campgrounds have reopened, with ongoing improvements to facilities. The county is committed to restoring access to the parkway and enhancing visitor experiences, with updates and graphics available on the county's website for public reference.
