Victorville City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing pedestrian safety by approving a budget amendment for the installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons at nine school crosswalks. During the regular meeting on September 2, 2025, the council unanimously adopted a resolution to allocate $149,310 from the state’s Highway Safety Improvement Program and an additional $465,000 from Measure I funds for this project.
City Engineer Freddy Bonilla introduced the initiative, emphasizing its role in improving traffic safety at critical intersections. The flashing beacons are designed to increase awareness among drivers and pedestrians, creating a safer environment for students as they navigate their way to and from school. This project will expand upon previous efforts, adding 19 new beacons at nine additional locations throughout the city.
The funding will also cover necessary Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements at the installation sites, ensuring accessibility for all community members. Council members expressed their support for the initiative, noting its timely implementation as schools are back in session.
With the council's approval, the city is set to enhance safety measures at these crosswalks, reflecting a commitment to protecting its residents, particularly children. The project is expected to significantly improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow in the areas surrounding schools.
