Rowlett City Council advances Waterview Golf Course upgrades to improve facilities and attract players

The Rowlett City Council is rallying behind significant improvements to the Waterview Golf Course, aiming to enhance its appeal and boost local revenue. During a recent strategy and planning session, council members highlighted the course's potential as a community asset, emphasizing the need for upgrades to attract more players and improve facilities.

Council Liaison Larry Shoop passionately advocated for the golf course, noting that it has suffered from neglect in the past but has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last year and a half. "Rounds are up significantly, and we’re able to get more money for rounds," he stated, crediting American Golf, which manages the course, for reinvesting in its maintenance and improvements.

The council is considering a combined funding request of $65,000, which includes $25,000 for fountain and pond maintenance and $40,000 earmarked for upgrading the driving range. Shoop expressed optimism about the return on investment, stating, "We expect the ROI is gonna come from increased player club memberships and increased rounds."

Council members echoed Shoop's sentiments, recognizing the golf course as a vital attraction that generates tax revenue and hosts numerous tournaments throughout the year. "The golf course really does need to look good, and you can charge more when it's a better course," one member noted, reinforcing the economic benefits of the proposed enhancements.

As the city celebrates the 25th anniversary of the golf course, the council is poised to take action that could transform Waterview into a premier golfing destination, benefiting both residents and visitors alike. The anticipated improvements are expected to not only elevate the golfing experience but also contribute positively to the local economy.
