Catholic Charities McKinney unveils resource advocacy center for working poor support

The McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) meeting on August 28, 2025, focused on the establishment of a new resource advocacy center aimed at supporting the local community. Dave Waityard, CEO of Catholic Charities McKinney, emphasized that this facility is not a homeless shelter but a prevention center designed to help individuals and families move from "hopeless to wholeness."

Waityard highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project, noting the involvement of various community organizations, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and local charities. He expressed gratitude for the community's support and the participation of those who toured similar facilities to understand the vision for the center.

A significant point raised during the meeting was the alarming statistic from a United Way study indicating that 42% of Texans live at or below the ALICE threshold—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. This demographic, often referred to as the working poor, faces financial instability, living just one paycheck away from crisis. Waityard stressed the need for comprehensive services to address these challenges.

The proposed center aims to serve as a "dignity hub," providing wrap-around services that allow individuals to access multiple resources without repeatedly sharing their personal stories. It is envisioned as a collaboration space for service seekers, donors, volunteers, and staff, fostering a sense of community and joy.

Waityard also mentioned a $517,000 grant awarded to MCDC, which has not yet been utilized but has helped attract additional partners to the project. The meeting concluded with a call for continued support from the community and local government to ensure the center's financial sustainability and success.
