West Valley City Approves Chlorine Generation System for Indoor Pool Upgrade

The West Valley City Council convened on August 26, 2025, to discuss significant improvements to the city's Family Fitness Center, focusing on the installation of a new chlorine generation system for the indoor pool and the replacement of the outdoor pool roof.

Candice Whitaker, the director of the Family Fitness Center, presented a proposal for a chlorine generation system, which would cost $175,216.11. Currently, the center relies on a traditional chlorine filtration system that incurs annual costs exceeding $30,000. The new system, which operates similarly to a saltwater pool, promises to reduce these costs significantly by eliminating the need for chlorine deliveries, which have become increasingly expensive and logistically challenging. Whitaker highlighted that the switch would not only enhance safety by removing the hazards associated with chlorine delivery but also improve the swimming experience for users, making the water feel softer and more pleasant.

The council learned that the estimated annual savings from this transition could reach approximately $3,035,000, primarily from reduced chlorine delivery costs. The new system would require minimal maintenance, with parts needing replacement every seven years, ensuring long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

In addition to the chlorine system, the council reviewed a proposal for replacing the roof of the Centennial Outdoor Pool. Two bids were presented, with American Roofing Company offering a significantly lower price of $37,025 compared to Done Right Roofing's bid of $136,400. The current roof is deteriorating, causing leaks and damage, and the council expressed urgency in moving forward with the replacement to prevent further issues.

The discussions during the meeting underscored the city's commitment to enhancing recreational facilities while being mindful of budgetary constraints. The proposed upgrades are expected to not only improve the quality of services offered at the Family Fitness Center but also contribute to the overall well-being of the community by providing safer and more enjoyable recreational options.
