Laredo ISD Welcomes New Teachers and Hosts Mock Trial for Students

The Laredo Independent School District (LISD) held a special meeting on August 26, 2025, focusing on welcoming new teachers and highlighting student engagement initiatives. Interim Superintendent Guillermo Pro expressed enthusiasm for the new school year, likening the recruitment of 15 new educators to drafting top talent in a sports draft. He emphasized the importance of these teachers in elevating the district's educational standards and wished them success in their roles.

The meeting also showcased the achievements of 13 LISD students who participated in the Kaizen Fellowship mock trial program. This initiative, held at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Laredo, allowed students to engage in real-life legal scenarios, acting as prosecutors and defendants. Monica Calles, Executive Director of CCMR and Schools of Innovation, noted that the program aimed to prepare students for future leadership roles by providing them with hands-on experience in the legal field.

Yvonne de Gallardo, a CCMR coordinator, highlighted the educational value of the mock trial, stating it teaches students about civics, government processes, and the judicial system. Participant Brianna Gonzalez shared her positive experience, encouraging others interested in law to take part in such opportunities.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the training of substitute teachers for the upcoming school year. Diana Martinez from the Department of Human Resources provided details about the annual training session, which took place at the LISD Performing Arts Center.

Overall, the meeting underscored LISD's commitment to enhancing educational experiences for both teachers and students, setting a positive tone for the new academic year.
