Saint Charles Township Considers Schoolhouse Variance Near Feedlot Site

A proposed schoolhouse in Saint Charles Township is stirring discussions as it seeks a variance to build just 260 feet away from a nearby feedlot, significantly less than the required 500-foot setback. The site, spanning approximately 28.9 acres, is located near the intersection of County Road 35 and Sinclair Road, raising concerns about proximity to agricultural operations.

During the recent Board of Adjustment meeting, officials reviewed the site plan, which shows the schoolhouse positioned close to the feedlot, which houses between 10 and 50 animal units. This proximity necessitates adherence to specific setback regulations. Notably, the neighboring property to the east, which has goats, does not require a permit due to its low animal unit count, further complicating the situation.

The township had no objections to the proposal, as confirmed in a recent meeting, and a neighbor's comment was also addressed in the meeting materials. Staff recommendations suggest that the board consider all evidence before making a decision, with a draft supporting the variance for the schoolhouse.

If approved, the petition will include two conditions for the construction, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of the potential impacts on the surrounding agricultural activities. The board is expected to weigh the benefits of the new schoolhouse against the established agricultural practices in the area, with a decision anticipated in the coming weeks.
