A proposed zoning change to residential in Edmond is stirring discussions among city council members, with some expressing cautious optimism about its potential benefits. During the recent council meeting, one member highlighted the need for more housing options for young professionals and essential workers, particularly those employed at nearby Tinker Air Force Base. "This is an appropriate location for this," they stated, emphasizing the demand for quality living spaces in the area.
The council member noted that the development could serve as a catalyst for further growth along the corridor, which has been in need of revitalization. They praised the developer's choice of design firm, Gartner, suggesting that the project could become a landmark for the community. "If this continues, it could be something we could be proud of," they remarked.
However, concerns were raised regarding the project's design and materials. The council member expressed a desire for clarity on the use of brick versus stucco, stating, "I wouldn't approve something that we're stucco at this point." They also advocated for a minimum of 4,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, excluding the leasing office, to enhance the mixed-use aspect of the development.
While the council member indicated support for the zoning change, they also expressed a willingness to delay the vote for further information, underscoring the importance of community dialogue in the decision-making process. The discussions reflect a balancing act between fostering development and ensuring it aligns with community standards and needs.
