Council Explores Facility Acquisition Within ERCOT for Energy Generation Expansion

Denton's Sustainability Framework Advisory Committee is actively exploring options for acquiring energy generation facilities, with a focus on enhancing local energy capacity. During a recent meeting, officials revealed they have received multiple inquiries from facility owners interested in selling, marking a shift from previous efforts where the city sought out potential acquisitions.

The committee emphasized the importance of staying within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region, particularly the north load zone, while remaining open to opportunities outside this area if they arise. However, they ruled out acquiring facilities within Denton city limits. The discussions highlighted a cautious approach towards coal and nuclear plants, with officials noting the high costs and regulatory challenges associated with these options.

Natural gas emerged as a primary focus, with over 100 existing generators in the state. The committee is considering both baseload and quick-start generation facilities to meet the projected need for 600 megawatts of capacity. They indicated that any potential acquisition would likely need to exceed 100 megawatts to be viable.
