Cochise County Sheriff Advocates for New Jail Facility to Address Safety Concerns

During a recent public meeting in Sierra Vista, Cochise County officials discussed the urgent need for a new jail facility, highlighting significant safety and operational challenges faced by the current jail, which was built in 1986. Sheriff Hartehouse emphasized that the existing structure is outdated and no longer meets modern standards for inmate and officer safety. He noted that the jail, originally designed for 160 inmates, has been expanded to accommodate 302, leading to overcrowding and increased strain on resources.

The meeting featured key presentations from various officials, including the sheriff, county attorney, and health services director, who collectively outlined the pressing issues within the jail system. Sheriff Hartehouse pointed out that the facility has become a "Money Pit," with ongoing infrastructure problems that are costly to maintain. He stressed the importance of community support for a new jail, stating, "It's time. We have to come together as a community to do this."

Kenny Bradshaw, the jail commander, highlighted specific safety concerns, including inadequate officer stations and the need for dedicated mental health facilities. He explained that the current setup exposes officers to risks and does not adequately address the mental health needs of inmates, which has become increasingly critical given the opioid crisis affecting the region.

Meghan Kennedy, director of health services for detention, echoed these concerns, noting that the jail's medical facilities are cramped and ill-equipped to handle the growing health issues among inmates. She emphasized the necessity of providing constitutionally adequate healthcare, which is challenging under the current conditions.

The discussions underscored a collective recognition among officials that a new, modern facility is essential not only for the safety of inmates and staff but also for the overall well-being of the community.
