May is officially recognized as Lupus Awareness Month in Clay County, following a unanimous proclamation by the Board of County Commissioners during their recent meeting. The declaration aims to raise awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions globally and poses significant challenges in diagnosis and management.
Jackie Dalton, the Northeast Florida Region Ambassador for the Lupus Foundation of America, along with former commissioner and current tax collector Diane Hutchings, were present to support the proclamation. The document highlights the unpredictable nature of lupus, which can impact various organs and systems in the body, leading to symptoms that range from mild to life-threatening.
The proclamation emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, noting that over 5 million people worldwide suffer from lupus, with more than 100,000 new diagnoses each year. It calls on the community to educate themselves about the disease and encourages individuals to consult healthcare providers for early detection.
Dalton expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that the proclamation serves as a vital reminder of the need for increased awareness, research, and support for those affected by lupus. She highlighted that raising awareness can lead to better diagnosis, stronger support systems, and improved quality of life for patients.
This initiative not only shines a light on lupus but also fosters a sense of community and support for those living with the disease, reinforcing the message that they are not alone in their struggle.
