In a recent Galveston City Council workshop, discussions highlighted the pressing need for enhanced community safety measures, particularly in light of rising short-term rentals and security concerns on the West End. Captain Pervez, president of the Pirates Homeowners Association, introduced the newly established Galveston Community Police Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization aimed at supplementing the city’s police budget.

Captain Pervez emphasized the foundation's origins, tracing back to challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic when the city was short-staffed by nearly 19 officers. He noted the increase in short-term rentals had exacerbated security issues, prompting community leaders to seek innovative solutions. The foundation aims to collaborate with the city council and the Galveston Police Department to raise funds and improve public safety.

The initiative, which took three years to establish, draws inspiration from successful models like the Houston Police Foundation, which raises approximately $1 million annually. Captain Pervez expressed optimism about the foundation's potential impact, stating, “We need to work together to get to where we need to be.”

As the foundation prepares to launch, it represents a proactive step towards addressing community safety and enhancing police resources in Galveston. The council's support will be crucial in ensuring the foundation's success and the overall safety of the community.
