The proclamation highlighted alarming statistics, noting that Texas ranks among the top two most dangerous states for motorcycle riding. As of May 20, 2025, there have been 574 fatalities related to motorcycle accidents in the state, translating to approximately 14.56 deaths per 10,000 registered motorcycle riders. With around 450,000 registered motorcycle riders in Texas, the council stressed the importance of vigilance and defensive riding.

Local motorcycle clubs, law enforcement, and traffic safety advocates are collaborating to promote rider education and safe practices. The council urged drivers to remain alert, avoid distractions, and respect the space of motorcyclists on the road. The slogan "Look Twice, Save a Life" was introduced as a reminder for drivers to be more aware of their surroundings, especially when sharing the road with motorcycles.

This proclamation not only aims to enhance safety for riders but also seeks to foster a culture of mutual respect and awareness among all road users in Amarillo. As the summer riding season approaches, the city is committed to ensuring that both motorcyclists and drivers can enjoy the roads safely.
