A heartfelt farewell and a celebration of educational achievements marked the Bossier Parish School Board's regular session on May 1, 2025. As the meeting commenced, the spotlight was on Dr. Jordan, who expressed deep gratitude for the support from colleagues and family as she transitions from her role in the curriculum department. "They love our students. And I love them right back," she said, reflecting on her time in education and her commitment to continuing the work of her predecessor, Judy Podner.
The session also highlighted significant strides in recruitment and retention efforts within the district. Dr. Tracy Burrell presented an inspiring report on the Bossier Prep program, which aims to cultivate future educators. This year, the program saw an increase in participation, with 62 students registered in the pre-educator club. Notably, 17 students excelled at the Louisiana State Educators Rising Conference, with two qualifying for the national competition in Orlando.
The board recognized outstanding students, including eighth grader Carly Riley, who topped her competition and will represent Bossier at nationals. Additionally, the meeting celebrated the third annual signing day, where 11 seniors committed to pursuing careers in education, further strengthening the district's future teaching workforce.
Dr. George Nofflin Jr. from Grambling State University emphasized the urgency of addressing the teacher shortage in Louisiana, noting that over 31,000 teachers have left the profession in recent years. He praised the "Call Me Mister" program, which aims to inspire young men to enter teaching, highlighting successful graduates who are already making an impact in local schools.
As the meeting concluded, the board and attendees celebrated the achievements of students and educators alike, reinforcing the district's commitment to fostering a new generation of teachers dedicated to serving the community. The initiatives discussed promise to enhance educational quality and address the pressing need for qualified educators in Bossier Parish.
