Mental health initiatives took center stage during the recent Town of Miami Lakes meeting, highlighting the critical role of community support in addressing mental health and substance use challenges. Maria Gohart, Vice President of Behavioral Health at Thriving Mind South Florida, emphasized the organization's commitment to providing a safety net for individuals in need of mental health services across Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
Gohart outlined Thriving Mind's extensive network, which includes partnerships with 48 providers to ensure that uninsured and underinsured individuals can access necessary treatment. "We serve everybody in the community, youth, children, adolescents, adults, anybody in need of services," she stated, underscoring the organization's inclusive approach.
A significant focus was placed on prevention and crisis intervention. Thriving Mind collaborates with local schools to promote awareness and prevent substance use among students. Gohart also discussed the importance of the 988 crisis hotline, which offers immediate support and resources for those in distress. "We need to really do a better job of spreading the word that that's it's such an invaluable resource," she remarked.
The meeting also introduced the mobile response team, available 24/7 to assist individuals experiencing mental health crises. Gohart praised the team's effectiveness, stating, "They are my go-to for substance use, for mental health resources."
