Enrollment projections for Howard County Public Schools (HCPSS) reveal a concerning trend, as the district anticipates a decrease in student numbers for the upcoming school year. During a recent Board of Education meeting, officials presented a detailed report outlining projections for the 2025-2026 school year, forecasting a decline of 269 students, bringing total K-12 enrollment to 55,631.

The report, which builds on previous enrollment studies and feasibility assessments, highlights a consistent downward trend in student numbers since the pandemic. The methodology used for these projections, known as cohort survival, has historically yielded high accuracy rates, but recent data indicates a shift. While the overall enrollment has been overestimated in past years, some schools are still experiencing localized increases due to new developments.

Key findings from the report indicate that while 31 schools are expected to see enrollment increases next year, 20 schools will operate below the target utilization range. Notably, several elementary schools, including Bryant Woods and Centennial Lane, are projected to exceed 110% capacity, raising concerns about overcrowding.

The report also emphasizes the impact of declining birth rates and a slowdown in residential construction on future enrollment figures. With the housing market remaining volatile, the long-term outlook for student numbers remains uncertain.
