Manatee County has taken a significant step towards addressing homelessness among women with the approval of a new partnership with Helping Up Mission to operate the Under 1 Roof Gateway Shelter. During the Board of County Commissioners meeting on June 17, 2025, officials highlighted the urgent need for dedicated services for women experiencing homelessness and addiction in the community.
The Under 1 Roof Gateway Shelter, located at 40750 Seventh Avenue East in Bradenton, will provide 24/7 emergency shelter and supportive services, including meals, case management, and access to long-term recovery programs. This initiative aims to fill a critical gap in the county's homeless response system, which has been lacking in resources specifically tailored for women.
Leah Hudson, the county's homeless project manager, emphasized the positive impact of the Helping Up Mission's programs, sharing her recent experiences in Baltimore where she witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of their services. The shelter will offer up to 30 days of accommodation for women, with the goal of connecting them to stable housing and employment resources.
County officials expressed their commitment to overseeing the shelter's operations through regular reporting and tracking to ensure effective service delivery. Commissioner Ballard praised the initiative as a vital use of opioid funds, highlighting its potential to create lasting change for women on the streets and their families.
This partnership marks a pivotal moment in Manatee County's efforts to combat homelessness and addiction, providing a much-needed lifeline for vulnerable women in the community. As the Under 1 Roof Gateway Shelter prepares to open, it stands poised to become a cornerstone of support and recovery for those in need.
