The Nantucket School Committee convened on June 17, 2025, to review the annual report from the Nantucket Whalers athletics department, presented by Travis Lombardi and Matt Hunt. The meeting highlighted a successful year for student athletes, coaches, and staff, emphasizing their dedication and sportsmanship both on and off the field.

Lombardi reported impressive participation numbers across all three athletic seasons. In the fall, 246 athletes participated in eight sports at Nantucket High School (NHS), while 156 athletes engaged in six sports at the Cyrus Peirce School (CPS). The winter season saw 165 athletes at NHS in seven sports and 53 at CPS in two sports. In the spring, participation included 188 athletes at NHS across eight sports and 65 at CPS in four sports. These figures reflect the department's commitment to providing diverse athletic opportunities that promote physical well-being and teamwork.

The report also celebrated notable achievements from each season. In the fall, both boys and girls soccer, field hockey, and girls volleyball qualified for the state tournament. A highlight was the football team's thrilling 22-14 overtime victory against Martha's Vineyard at Fenway Park. The winter season featured the swimming and diving team as the sole qualifier for the state tournament, with both the girls swimming and girls basketball teams crowned Cape and Islands League champions. Individual accolades included Maddie Lombardi and Maya Johnson being named league MVPs in basketball and swimming, respectively.

In the spring, boys and girls tennis and lacrosse teams qualified for the state tournament, with the girls tennis team making history by reaching the elite eight. The report also noted significant player milestones, including Adney Brannigan becoming the all-time leading scorer in girls soccer and Rory Murray setting a school record in cross country.

The athletic department focused on continuous improvement, welcoming three new varsity head coaches and enhancing safety protocols through CPR and first aid certifications for staff. A significant development was the launch of the Whalers Athletics app, designed to improve communication and engagement within the athletic community.

The meeting concluded with Lombardi expressing gratitude for the support received from the community, acknowledging that the achievements of the athletic department would not have been possible without the collective efforts of many individuals.
