Austin Parks and Recreation Board members gathered on June 23, 2025, to discuss critical safety and security measures for city parks, following rising concerns from the community. A significant focus of the meeting was a security audit commissioned by the Austin Parks Foundation (APF), aimed at addressing crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).

Amanda Ross, division manager for natural resources within the Parks and Recreation Department, emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of safety concerns that have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic. The audit, conducted by the consulting group Arup, aims to provide actionable insights into improving park safety and security.

Joy Kosnowski from the Austin Parks Foundation explained that the foundation stepped in to fund the audit after discussions with the Parks Department highlighted it as a top priority. The collaboration aims to create a safer environment in parks, addressing issues such as gun violence, homelessness, and inadequate lighting.

The audit process is structured in four phases, beginning with data collection and analysis, followed by interviews with park staff to gather insights on their experiences regarding safety. The findings from this audit are expected to serve as a baseline for future safety initiatives and will inform operational investments within the Parks Department.

Board members raised questions about the involvement of the Austin Parks Foundation in the security audit, expressing concerns about the qualifications of non-police entities in addressing serious safety issues. However, the board acknowledged the importance of the audit in developing a strategic approach to park safety.

As the meeting concluded, the board reinforced the significance of the audit and the collaborative efforts between the Parks Department and the Austin Parks Foundation.
