These surgeries included a cataract procedure and an emergency surgery for a twisted bowel, both of which were deemed critical for improving participants' quality of life and supporting their recovery journeys.

The cataract surgery, costing $6,880.81, enabled a participant to correct vision issues that had previously hindered their ability to regain a driver's license. Meanwhile, the $19,460 surgery for a twisted bowel addressed chronic pain that could lead to increased cravings for substance use, thus posing a risk for relapse. Both individuals had faced challenges with health insurance coverage, which complicated their access to necessary medical care.

The board's discussion underscored the importance of integrating primary and behavioral health care, as these surgeries were seen as essential to the overall recovery process. Payments for the surgeries were made directly to the healthcare providers, ensuring that the funds were used appropriately.
