The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) Board meeting on August 20, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in Louisiana's drainage infrastructure, aimed at enhancing flood management and water quality. A key focus was the upgrade of pump stations, which are now equipped with SCADA technology for remote operation, ensuring efficient management of rainwater.
The board discussed the staffing of these pump stations, noting that many operators have residences nearby, which supports 24-hour monitoring and operation. This arrangement not only improves response times but also serves as an attractive perk for employees.
Major canal projects were also on the agenda, with specific mention of the Elmwood, Berlin, South Bend, Keno, and Industry Canals. These upgrades are designed to optimize water flow, directing rainwater to the river rather than the lake, thereby improving drainage efficiency.
The drainage team oversees an extensive network, managing nearly 1,500 miles of subsurface drainage, 194 pumps, and 340 miles of canals and ditches. However, the board acknowledged ongoing challenges related to maintenance, staffing, and training within this complex system.
Looking ahead, the CPRA plans to conduct studies on both the East and West Banks of the parish to identify problem areas and initiate new project phases in the coming years. These efforts are crucial for maintaining and improving Louisiana's drainage capabilities, ultimately benefiting the community by reducing flood risks and enhancing water management.
