During a recent joint meeting of the City of Dallas, Oregon Economic Development Commission and the SDURDAC, discussions centered on the potential development of over 40 acres of industrial land with rail access. This property, which has been out of service for some time, presents a unique opportunity for economic growth in the region.
Mike Ewan, an industrial development specialist, emphasized the importance of this land for attracting businesses that require rail access. He noted that the site, which includes former warehouse and mill properties, is one of the few in Oregon that can accommodate such needs. Ewan's role involves connecting potential customers with suitable parcels, highlighting the significance of this land for future industrial development.
Renee LaSapio from Portland Western Railroad echoed Ewan's sentiments, pointing out that the property has good infrastructure but requires investment to make it operational again. She mentioned that the track spans approximately 2 to 3 miles and has previously attracted interest for storage opportunities. However, LaSapio raised concerns about the increasing threat of data centers purchasing rail-served properties, which could lead to the loss of valuable rail infrastructure.
Both speakers stressed the importance of preserving these rail properties for industrial use, as they could attract large manufacturing companies that would create high-paying jobs for the community. The meeting underscored a collective commitment to fostering economic development while safeguarding essential infrastructure for future opportunities.
As the City of Dallas continues to explore options for this industrial land, the discussions signal a proactive approach to enhancing local economic prospects and ensuring that the community benefits from potential new industries. The next steps will involve further collaboration among stakeholders to secure the future of this vital property.
