MassDOT recommends all-way stop controls for Stafford Street intersections in recent safety evaluation

Safety concerns took center stage at the Charlton Select Board meeting on August 12, 2025, as officials discussed the pressing need for all-way stop controls at two critical intersections. Following a thorough evaluation by MassDOT and GPI Engineering, the board received recommendations to implement stop controls at Stafford Street and Center Depot Road, as well as the intersection of Center Depot Road and City Depot Road with HK Davis Road.

Nick Peel, a representative from MassDOT, highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that there have been 32 incidents at the Stafford Street and Center Depot Road intersection that could have been prevented with an all-way stop. "This is the second recommendation in three years for this specific intersection," Peel stated, emphasizing the importance of a unified approach to enhance public safety.

If the board approves the recommendations, MassDOT will provide new signage at no cost, although the existing flashing light will need to be converted. The discussions reflect ongoing concerns about traffic safety in the area, with board members encouraged to reach a consensus on the best path forward.

As the board deliberates, the potential for improved safety measures remains a priority, with Peel urging members to consider the significant impact of these changes. "We need to come to an agreement to provide a safer intersection," he concluded, underscoring the critical nature of the proposed adjustments.
