Committee Approves $14K Roof Repairs for Community College Mobile Classrooms

Macon County Commissioners have approved a significant funding decision that will enhance the infrastructure of local community college facilities. During the meeting on August 12, 2025, the commissioners reached a consensus to support Southwestern Community College (SCC) in addressing urgent capital needs, specifically the replacement of roofs on three mobile classrooms.

Initially, the college had requested $40,000 for the project, but after reviewing estimates, it was determined that the total cost would be approximately $14,819. This reduction in expected expenses allows the college to proceed with necessary repairs while staying within budget. The lowest bid for the roofing work was confirmed to come from a licensed contractor with appropriate insurance and workman’s compensation, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

The mobile classrooms, which date back to the early 2000s, require new architectural shingles to replace the aging three-tab shingles currently in place. The commissioners discussed the potential need for plywood replacement, as the existing roofs may have underlying issues. However, the consensus was that the investment in the new roofs would extend the life of the mobile units, which are essential for educational purposes.
