Commissioners Propose Suspension of Boerne Town Fire Department Contract Amid Training Concerns

Macon County Commissioners are taking significant steps to address fire service challenges in the region, as discussions during the August 12, 2025 meeting highlighted the urgent need for a county-wide fire department. The proposal, which could require taxpayers to contribute between $14 million to $16 million, aims to enhance fire protection and support volunteer firefighters who have been crucial in saving costs for the county.

Commissioners emphasized the importance of incentivizing volunteer firefighters, who dedicate substantial time to training and service. Suggestions included creating recognition programs to attract younger volunteers and improve morale among existing members. The need for modernized equipment and better communication systems was also underscored, particularly for remote areas like Nanahala, which rely on mutual aid from neighboring departments.

A key motion made during the meeting was to suspend the contract with the Burnetown Fire Department, which has faced operational challenges. This decision, supported by Commissioner Sherrill and seconded by Commissioner Antoine, aims to ensure that residents continue to receive adequate fire protection. Legal counsel clarified that if the contract is suspended, immediate arrangements must be made with another fire department to maintain coverage.

The Calaway Fire Department has been identified as a potential provider, having already responded to numerous calls without compensation over the past year. This transition is seen as a necessary step to ensure that both the community and the dedicated volunteers are adequately supported.
