Bill Thompson and Tanya Taylor Appointed to Fill Vacant Seats at Western Montgomery Center

The Pottsgrove School Board meeting held on August 12, 2025, focused on key appointments and updates regarding the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center. The board approved the appointment of Bill Thompson to fill the vacant seat of Dr. Nippert, which will last until December 2025. This decision was met with unanimous support from board members.

In addition, Tanya Taylor was appointed as the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit legislative liaison, also filling Dr. Nippert's seat until December 2025. Both appointments were approved without opposition.

The meeting also included a report from the Joint Operating Committee (JOC) of the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center. Notably, it marked Dr. Finney's first meeting as the superintendent of record. The committee discussed the need for renovations and improvements at the center, with a recommendation to establish a bond for funding rather than creating a capital expenses budget. Four architectural firms have submitted proposals for these renovations, with a recommendation expected in October.

Updates on facility improvements included the completion of new flooring in the cafeteria and the installation of LED lighting in the automotive and collision areas. The center has also transitioned to a 95% keycard access system to enhance security.

The meeting highlighted the approval of pre-apprenticeship programs in electrical and precision machining, with plans for a third program in welding. This initiative aligns with the state’s goal of expanding vocational training opportunities.

The JOC also addressed recent federal guidance on Title IX, which has raised concerns about its implications for local schools. The board approved several policies and supplemental contracts for instructors, as well as a trip to Italy for students, which will incur no costs to the school.

The next JOC meeting is scheduled for September 8, 2025, via Zoom, where further discussions and updates are anticipated.
