Council Approves Speed Bumps and Stop Signs on Edgewood Drive and Allen Lane

Concerns over speeding and traffic safety took center stage at the Louisburg Town Council meeting on August 13, 2025, as residents and council members discussed the urgent need for speed bumps and stop signs on Edgewood Drive and Allen Lane.

William, a local resident, passionately addressed the council, highlighting the dangers posed by speeding vehicles on Edgewood Drive, particularly for elderly neighbors and those with mobility issues. He proposed the installation of speed bumps and even offered to help with the construction if necessary. “We literally sit on our front porch and scream and yell at people that are flying down our road,” he said, emphasizing the growing frustration among residents.

In response to these concerns, the council discussed a resolution to install two sets of speed bumps on Edgewood Drive and two on Allen Lane, along with two stop signs at the intersection of Wytheville Street and Edgewood. Council member Brown noted that the proposal aimed to deter speeding not only on Edgewood but also on Allen Lane, where traffic might shift if measures were only taken on Edgewood.

However, the conversation expanded beyond these specific streets. Council members expressed that speeding is a widespread issue throughout the town, with particular mention of Church Street and Main Street. One council member proposed lowering the citywide speed limit from 35 to 25 mph, arguing that the current limit encourages dangerous driving behaviors in residential areas.

The council is expected to take these recommendations into serious consideration, with further discussions planned for future meetings. The proposed changes aim to enhance safety for all residents and address the growing concerns about traffic in Louisburg.
