Apontec Student Council Celebrates Achievements in Sports and Arts Education

The Freetown-Lakeville School Committee meeting held on January 24, 2018, featured a range of updates from student council representatives, highlighting various achievements and activities within the school community.

The meeting began with an exciting announcement about the Aponecua hockey team, which celebrated its first Pro Under Cup victory with a close 6-5 win against Somerset Berkeley. Following this, alumni Carly Byers and Lauren Petty presented a slideshow to Mrs. Erwin's art classes, discussing potential art majors available at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

A collaborative project between the life skills program and Mrs. Mills' engineering class was also showcased. Students worked in pairs to design contraptions that successfully protected eggs dropped from the second story of the rotunda, with Alex Anacio and Jake Cumberland's design emerging as the winning entry.

The Class of 2018 held its third annual gingerbread-making competition, engaging over 50 students and staff, with photos of the event shared on the school website. Additionally, Lila Wilkinson and Hannah Sharon from the Class of 2021 completed their internship at the library, culminating in the creation of a website featuring book reviews and information about library programs.

The meeting also covered academic updates, including the posting of quarter two grades and the commencement of new semester courses. A spring parent and guardian night is scheduled for March 15 from 6 to 8 PM.

The DECA business club recently participated in a district-level competition, where over 180 awards were distributed, and 40 students qualified for the state conference. A complete list of winners is available on the school website.

Eight student leaders attended the third annual CMAS winter conference, focusing on leadership development and community support through initiatives like Annie's Kindness Blankets campaign. The Class of 2019 learned about the benefits of dual enrollment in a recent presentation.

Law enforcement interns presented their semester one cumulative experiences, which will soon be available on the school website. The meeting concluded with recognition of the boys' and girls' track teams, with the boys finishing the season with a record of 6-1-1 and the girls achieving an undefeated record, a notable accomplishment not seen in 16 years. Both teams are now preparing for the conference championship on February 10.
