Los Angeles Fire Department Updates Brush Clearance Requirements Following CAL FIRE Map Revision

In a recent meeting, the Los Angeles City Council discussed significant updates to fire hazard maps by CAL FIRE, which will lead to new brush clearance ordinances for homeowners. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) outlined the changes and emphasized the importance of compliance to enhance community safety during wildfire seasons.

The brush clearance unit within the LAFD is responsible for inspecting properties in fire hazard severity zones to ensure they meet state law requirements for brush clearance. These inspections occur annually, aiming to protect both developed and vacant lands from potential wildfires. The LAFD clarified that the initial communication sent to homeowners at the start of each fire season is informational, not punitive. This mailer is designed to educate residents about the new requirements rather than serve as a notice of violation.

Historically, brush clearance focused on maintaining a 200-foot perimeter around structures, including specific guidelines for grass, weeds, and tree heights. However, the updated model encourages a shift in mindset regarding these practices. Homeowners are now responsible for adhering to 14 specific clearance requirements, which can be accessed online for clarity.

The updated CAL FIRE maps, the first revision since 2014, utilize advanced scientific technology to assess fire risks more accurately. This new mapping considers factors such as fire embers, behavior, historical fire data, and topography. As a result, the fire severity zones have been redefined, with the very high-risk zone expanding to include an additional 20,000 properties. Overall, the changes could affect up to 16 million acres across Los Angeles, highlighting the city's growing vulnerability to wildfires.
